Half Termly Celebration Assembly - Flourishing

It was lovely coming together as a school community to celebrate our flourishing children leaving up to our church school vision and values. We love welcoming parents/ carers into the school and bringing everybody together to celebrate personal and academic growth. Well done to all and continue doing 'All of the good you can'.

Mini First Aid

The children took part in mini first aid. These are important skills to learn that will help to keep the children safe within the school community, home and when playing and interacting outside of school within the local community and New Holland. The children were very grown up and sensible during this class and we were extremely proud of the way they engaged in the first aid activities. The children will now be able to 'do all the good they can' for themselves and for others.

Bishop's Letter and our Bishop's Visitor

Our Bishop's Visitor came into school to share the Bishop's letter in our morning worship. It was lovely to come together and share in reflection.

Bishop's Visitor Easter Egg Hunt

Our Bishop's Visitor, David Denovan, planned and prepared an Easter Egg Hunt for our KS2 children (years 3-6) this afternoon. Our children loved this experience - it was magical and helped them to feel valued. David is very generous with his time and the opportunities that he provides for the children.

Bishop's Visitor Easter Egg Hunt

Our Bishop's Visitor, David Denovan, planned and prepared an Easter Egg Hunt for our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children this afternoon. Our children loved this experience - it was magical and helped them to feel valued. David is very generous with his time and the opportunities that he provides for the children.

EYFS: Nursery and Reception Easter Service

Today we recapped our learning about Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. We then concluded the story of Easter with Christ’s resurrection and the angels visiting Mary at his tomb. The children made an Easter garden including Jesus, Mary and a soldier, the cross and tomb. They included spring flowers, chicks and eggs to signify Easter being a time of new life and rebirth.

We couldn’t be prouder of our children in worship today. They were confident, clear and provided the audience with an engaging performance. Standing in front of a crowd can be daunting but you all shone brightly and 'flourished' on that stage, well done!

Easter Service

Our school and the community came together for our Easter Service. This was led by children from KS1 and KS2 and was very well atttended by parents and carers. The children 'flourished' in their roles and demonstrated leadership skills and responsibility. We were extremely proud of all of them and the aprticipation of all and their beuatiful singing. The Easter story was well portrayed and helped us all to reflect together as a community.

Reception Children supported the service by learning and reading a poem. This was a big challenge for them and they were very brave in front of such a large audience.

EYFS: Nursery and Reception Palm Sunday

This week we have explored Palm Sunday, the start of the Christian Holy Week. By taking turns role-playing as Jesus they gained a wonderful sense of what it might have felt like to enter Jerusalem and experience the incredible excitement of the cheering crowds. Conversely, we also spoke about how other people had felt jealous or threatened by Jesus.

EYFS Nursery and Reception: Symbols of Christianity

The children have learned about the central symbols of the Christian faith and the importance of the cross and crucifix. The children have created a vibrant stained glass window and they are delighted to have it feature on our door as a centrepiece of their learning

Mr Morgan (one of our Methodist Visitors) helps the children to value the history of their school.

Thank you to our visitor today, Mr Morgan. He attended New Holland school, in our very classroom, 68 years ago! The children prepared very thoughtful questions that guided our learning today about being a child in the past. We found out many interesting facts... the toilet was outside and had no roof, there was no phonics - you had to memorise every word by repetition, it was very strict and if the teacher wasn’t happy with your work you had to stand in the corner wearing a special hat! You weren’t even allowed to smile in your school photograph! The children played one of Mr Morgan’s favourite games snakes and ladders - we were shocked to hear there were no TVs or no IPads either!

EYFS: Nursery and Reception Learn About Judaism

This week we looked at a special book in Judaism, the Torah Scrolls. The children created their own scroll and treated it with respect by covering it with cloth as would be kept in synagogue. They took turns to read it using a pretend yad - we spoke about how it can not be touched by hand as it is so respected and treated with care. The children continued to access the scroll during their provision time and even replicated what they had seen putting a bowl on their head to look like a Rabbi wearing his Kippah.

Courageous Advocacy and Social Justice

We have a very inspiring young girl who approached us because they wanted to raise awareness of autism amongst the school community but also wider within New Holland community. Kelsey approached me to explain what she wanted to do and produced a poster which we shared both in school and with the local community at her request to raise awareness of autism and the work undertaken by this charity to offer support to families and children as this mattered to her. Kelsey brought the whole school and community together through this initiative and we are proud of her courageous advocacy and determination to celebrate social diversity/ inclusion and fight for social justice. Kelsey wanted others to understand feeling different and wanted people to be aware of what this charity strives to do to support children and families.

Kelsey is living out our Christian vision of 'Doing all of the good she can' and through her work is an example of being an agent of change.

Courageous Advocacy and Social Justice

Through learning about Africa and Nepal (our partner school project) and what education is like for some children in these countries, our children wanted to support a project where others could be empowered to seize opportunity. At our children’s request, we found Mo and his partner who grew up in Gambia but moved to the UK and who now work for the NHS in Hull. They visit Gambia twice a year and take with them furniture, objects and equipment to provide ‘hope’ and ‘opportunity’ for children in schools. They shared their stories of how children have school furniture made for them (if they are lucky) and parents will walk this furniture miles to school for their child. This chair or desk would then travel through school with the child who would be very proud that this belonged to them. Mo talked with prode of the school he now supports that was little more than a space underneath a tree when he attended eighteen years ago.

Our children suggested that we have a ‘clear out’ and donate things from our sheds/ garages/ stores currently not being used to enable the children in Gambia to feel valued/ valuable and use items provided to seize opportunity and ‘learn’ to make the best of life chances possible/ open to them. Mo and his partner will be visiting New Holland in January to share the impact of the children’s courageous advocacy in January and will keep us updated and connected with the children, schools and communities in Gambia to enable us to understand how we have helped them to make a difference for themselves as Mo and his partner have done and our partners in Nepal are doing.

Courageous Advocacy and Social Justice

As part of a “Mini Police” project with our local Police Community Support Officer, our children participated in six weekly sessions which were tailored to our local community and focused on breaking down barriers through engagement with young people, building trust and confidence; creating partnership working with schools, academies and education authorities. The impact of this was seen throughout the summer by the local police who said that, “The impact on the children has been transformational. Over the summer, the children have engaged with us in a much more positive way, often coming over to speak whenever they see me or my colleague. There is much more trust and they are happy to discuss any local issues or concerns they have. This is something we have not seen in other villages where we have taught the programme.”

This was lovely to hear and extremely heart warming listening to how the children were living out our Christian vision, 'Looking Forward With Hope. Flourishing. Doing All of the Good We Can.'

Our Children Leading Improvements to the School Environment

During the summer a group of children had asked if they could improve the outside environment. Supported by the Bishop’s Visitor, the outside environment of the school was improved through tidying, creating and nurturing flower beds and reflective areas. The children were proud of their achievement and continue to nurture the needs and comment on how the plants and flowers have flourished just like them.
